On Owls, Being Awake, and Sleep Talking

The “being awake,” it is not making me happy this morning.  I’m reeeeeally tired because not only did my youngest stay up half the night with a cough (and being four years old, he was decidedly less than sweet about it), but we had the interesting experience of being kept awake by none other than an owl that had decided to perch on the roof directly above our bedroom.  It was pretty cool at first…the strange noise was first incorporated into the dream I was just starting to have…but you know, after a half hour of the owl rather loudly calling (and being answered in kind) I was ready to have it quiet again.  Since Jack got up AGAIN shortly thereafter, it was not to be. Never heard an owl like that before.  We tried to see if it was perched outside a window so we could get a look at it, but it was definitely on the roof.  So this morning, I did some research online, and it turns out our nocturnal visitor was a Great Horned Owl.  That call is unmistakable as anything else.  Aren’t they pretty?  It was likely calling with its mate.  I love owls, so it’s pretty cool that we seem to have a pair in the immediate area.

So going with the sleep theme, have you guys heard of Sleep Talkin’ Man?  I believe he and his wife have been on some morning shows just lately, because their funny little blog has taken off.  He apparently talks in his sleep almost every night, and his wife thought the stuff he said was so out there she started recording it for posterity.  To both of their surprise, they are suddenly a little bit famous.  Here’s a sample, a night where Adam (that’s his name) was apparently dreaming about pirates:

“If I wanted to see a long nose and a big ass, I’d look at a horse.”

“Butt cheeks ahoy! There she blows!”

“You can’t be a pirate if you haven’t got a beard. I said so. MY boat, MY rules.”

“We haven’t got a plank. Just fucking jump.”

“Don’t jump on me!”

It’s pretty funny, I highly recommend it. And if they ever put “Badgertastic!” on a t-shirt, I do believe I would buy one :-)   Check it out here.  And have a great Tuesday!

  • Hi Kendra, sorry your little one is not feeling well. We’ve had one illness after another in my house since the kids started back to school in the fall.
I love owls but don’t see many. Mostly we have hawks and turkey vultures (lovely beasties).
I’ve read the Sleep Talking Man blog a few times and wondered how the heck you can make out what someone sleeping says! LOL All the people I’ve heard talking in their sleep it’s been jibberish to me. But it’s funny!

    :)

Sorry about the sick little fellow. And your lost sleep. Sleep talking Guy is a HOOT!!! I’ve had one visit from a Owl like this. I was heading to work in the we hours of the morning. I heard this sound coming from outside of our Breezeway. I went out and looked. They’re in way sitting on our Trellis Bench. Cute as can be. I thought mine was a Barn OWL, but he looked just like this little HOOTER. “Butt cheeks Ahoy! There she blows” LOL!!!

Hey Kendra, I imagine you’re as exhausted as I am. I have’t had a full nights uninterupted sleep in several days now. Some of it my own insomnia, but mostly the kids. Garrett has strep throat, diagnosed yesterday. I hate that he’s missing school. They cover so much in a day and it’s hard to catch up! Hope Jack recovers soon. At least Garrett’s got antibiotics. No more fever as of yesterday, so we’ll see. :) Oh and Jamie thinks he’s getting it. A sick husband, OMG, I’m done for!

Owls don’t visit too much here in the “city” but I do enjoy them. But all that nocturnal hooting when you’re trying to sleep? Yeah, the novelty wears off pretty quick.

My hubby just told me about this sleep talking guy. I hadn’t seen anything about it. I can’t wait to show him the link. I’m with MsM, though; just a little skeptical. And notice how so much of it has a sexual connotation(sp?)?

Things that make you go “hmmmmmmmm”.

Hi MsM! Oh yeah, turkey vultures, aka Nature’s Cleanup Crew. We have plenty of those, and they seem to eat well! Ugly, but useful :-) I love hawks…we have lots of those too, and Ospreys (the young of which are apparently a favorite snack of the Great Horned Owl). I hear you on the eternal illness. Hope everyone’s well there for the moment, at least! School is a freaking petri dish of germs, ugh.

Hey Donna! Sounds like you had the same sort of owl. And the samples of the call I listened to were from Great Horned Owls in Minnesota, so I bet that was your visitor! Glad you like Sleep Talking Guy…I laughed my butt off :-)

Hi Lisa! Oh no, poor Garrett! And poor you. I really hope Jamie doesn’t actually have it, I know how that goes. Sounds like we both need sleep. I’m a bit skeptical of Sleep Talking Man as well, but OMG it’s funny!!

Hey guys, I’m sorry to hear about the kids being ill (Jack & Garrett) Hope they feel better soon. And I do have bad news, it doesn’t matter how old they get, they still act like they are 3 years old when they are sick. Even at 20, my son wanted me to stay home from work to take care of him!!! No kidding! And no I did not stay home and he did just fine!

  • ROFL Jessica about you 20yr son wanting his Mommy to stay home and take care of him! Too funny because SOOOOOOOOO many grown men are like that! When I am sick, I want to be left ALONE.

    :)

Funny, I hope you didn’t call work for him Jessica.
Hey Ladies, who love Adam Lambert(Glambert). Check out Ellen’s Show Video’s for Adam’s performance today. It was really great. All Black Leather and Boots. And a good Song. Woohoo!!! He can perform.

Thankfully I haven’t had to deal with a sick kid for a while now. However, I have been there, and I feel your exhaustion. Hope the coughing ends soon!

Never had an owl do that around my house before, and I’ve never seen one in my barn, either, which surprises me. We once had a whippoorwill being rather vocal. I think it was after that that Mikey wouldn’t sleep with his window open. It drove him crazy!

Kendra it always sucks when someone in your family is sick. Hope he gets better. I’ve never seen or heard on owl nearby actually. But they are pretty.

As for the Sleepin’ Man never heard of that either but it is pretty funny XD

LOL, MsM and Jessica…it never changes, at 4, 20, or (and I speak from experience) 35, LOL. But they’re quite resilient, if whiny :-)

Donna, I must see that! His current single wasn’t at all one of my favorites on his album, but it’s not bad either. What did he sing? I’m anxious to see which they release next!

Cheryl, OMG, whippoorwills are LOUD! And they seem to have amazing singing stamina. My parents had one last year that would show up every evening and start up, and I swear it went for hours. Maybe he really wanted a girlfriend? :-)

Hi Ana! Thanks. At least he’s not too bad, but he needs his rest, and so do we! The nighttime coughing is the worst. A warm bath finally helped relax him some, at least.

    Kendra,
The song Adam did on Ellen today is “Strut”
So let’s all strut our stuff.
It’s on the left side of page. Scroll done the video list.

  • LisaNo Gravatar:

Oh, I love that song by Adam! Ellen is on in the afternoon here, but I gotta pick up kids today…might miss it. I caught the Thunder from Down Under guys playing musical chairs on her site this morning. Very entertaining.

  • KendraNo Gravatar:

Ooh, I LOVE Strut! That’s a great song!!
